With over two decades of experience in coaching, athlete development and coach education, Jon Casson started Transition Consulting to share his experience, knowledge and expertise with coaches from all sports. 

 

His background in non-traditional sports gives him a unique perspective and insight that will help all coaches grow and develop their own coaching practice.

BACKGROUND AND CAREER

​

Originally from Washington, DC, Jon grew up skateboarding and mountain biking on the streets and trails of Northern Virginia. In 1997, he moved to Steamboat Springs, Colorado, where he began working as a snowboard instructor before transitioning into coaching competitive snowboarding with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, Team Utah, and the Park City Snowboard Team. Throughout his coaching career, Jon worked with some of the world's top snowboarders, helping athletes achieve podiums and top finishes at the Youth Olympic Games, World Cups, National Championships, World Championships, the U.S. Open, X Games, and the Winter Olympics.

In addition to coaching, Jon served on the Executive Board of the United States of America Snowboard Association (USASA) and completed two terms as Chair of the Snowboard Committee for U.S. Ski & Snowboard, where he also served on the Board of Directors. He chaired the U.S. Snowboard Coach Education Committee for ten years and played a leading role in developing and modernizing snowboard coach education in the United States.

In 2015, Jon joined U.S. Ski & Snowboard as Coach Education Manager and later Director of Sport Education, where he led a comprehensive overhaul of coach education across all snow sports. In 2018, he returned to high-performance coaching as Head Coach of the Canadian SnowboardCross National Team before bringing his coach education expertise to mountain biking as Senior Coach Licensing Manager for the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) from 2019 to 2020.

 

In 2021, Jon founded Transition Consulting, LLC to help coaches and organizations improve coach education and development across multiple sports. From 2021 to 2025, he also served as Head SnowboardCross Coach for the Auburn Snowboard Team, leading one of the premier snowboardcross development programs in the US. In 2025, Jon was appointed Director of Education for the Professional Mountain Bike Instructors Association (PMBIA), where he leads the continued development of international mountain bike instructor and coach education programs.

 

Today, Jon continues to coach, consult, and develop coach education programs internationally, combining nearly three decades of experience in athlete development, instructor education, and organizational leadership across snowboarding and mountain biking.

• 2014, 2015 and 2017 Gold Medals- Junior World Championships Team SnowboardCross (SBX)

• Coached athletes to 15 podium results at Junior World Championships

• Coached athletes to 55 NorAm Individual Podiums and 7 NorAm Overall Podiums

• Coach or Director of the 2001, 2004, 2007, 2012 and 2015 US Snowboard Programs of the Year

• 11 athletes (6 in SBX) from SSWSC programs competed in the 2018 Olympic Winter Games

• 6 Medals by athletes from the SSWSC Snowboard Program in the 2014 and 2018 Winter Olympic Games

• Former athletes Jarryd Hughes and Mick Dierdorff placed 2nd and 5th in 2018 Winter Olympics SnowboardCross

• Former athlete Mick Dierdorff wins both Team and Individual SBX World Championships in 2019

• Former athletes Jarryd Hughes and Belle Brockhoff win 2021 World Championships in SnowboardCross Mixed Gender Relay

• Participant- Cohort 3 of the Nippon Sport Science University Coach Developer Academy (2016)

• Instructor Trainer- IMBA Mt Bike Instructor Certification Program (2013-2016)

• Chairman and Trainer- US Snowboard Coach Education Program (2006-2015)

• Regional Coach Supporter Trainer- National Interscholastic Cycling Association (2019-Present)

• Led the development and implementation of Online Coach Education and Certification programs for all 7 snow sport disciplines under US Ski and Snowboard.

• Led the development of Online Coach Education for the National Interscholastic Cycling Association impacting over 11,000 coaches in 28 states across the US.
